Mise-en-scene is included in every single TV show, web series, and movie. Below I have four scenes from the Guild and I will talk about each of the five components of mise-en-scene within each of the scenes.
Setting: In this scene you see a bed with clothes on it, showing that Codex might be a little messy, a guitar, showing that she probably enjoys music, and a bookshelf, showing she enjoys to read and is also intelligent. You can also tell that she is in her bedroom due to the surrounding objects in the scene.
Lighting: The lighting in this scene consists of a low key light. No fill or back light was involved in this scene because the scene is dark and the background looks very close to here even though we know that it’s not really all that close.
Costume: It appears that Codex is wearing a tank top with a little lace. It looks like she is wearing a night shirt so we can assume she is about to either go to bed or just woke up.
Space: The space in this scene is a deep space. It has a foreground, mid-ground, and background. The foreground consist of just Codex. The mid-ground consist of Codex’s bed and guitar and the background consist of the bookshelf and window.
Acting: In this scene Codex looks to be freaked out. Her eyes are buggy like something happened that shouldn’t have and that she wouldn’t have expected and it scared her. Her eyebrows are also arched in a way that make it seem that she was freaked out.
Setting: The only thing you see in this scene is a beige wall and a big window so you can assume that Codex and Zaboo are in a house.
Lighting: There is obviously natural light involved in this scene. You can tell buy not only just looking at the window but by the glare that it leaves in the scene. The natural light is too strong causing the key light to not show very well.
Costume: You can see in this scene that Codex is wearing a purple V-neck shirt and Zaboo is wearing, what can assume to be, a nice green shirt. Their outfits make it seem like they just got home from going out or getting ready to leave to go somewhere.
Space: This scene has deep space in it because it has a foreground, mid-ground, and background. The foreground consist of Zaboo, the mid-ground consist of Codex and the background consist of the beige wall and window.
Acting: Zaboo has his back turned to the camera so you can’t say anything about his acting. However, Codex appears to be either frustrated or disgusted. Her face gives off the impression that she is disgusted and wants nothing to do with what Zaboo is saying or doing but with her arms being crossed it gives off the impression that she is frustrated or mad.
Setting: On the table you see that there are salt and pepper shakers, sugar packets, plate mats, drinks, and silverware so you can assume that Clara, her baby, and Tink are at a restaurant. There are also 3 alcoholic drinks in front of Clara so you can assume that she has being drinking a lot.
Costume: Clara is wearing a nice blue and black stripped Cardigan and an undershirt so it looks like she came from some sort of job or doing something that required her to look nice. The baby is wearing what looks like a small blue sweater making it clear that the baby is a boy. Tink is wearing a cute tank top that any teenage girl would wear out so she made sure to dress for the occasion but she is also wearing an oven mitt so it appears that she was cooking or something.
Space: This scene has a deep space because it has a foreground, mid-ground, and background. The foreground consist of the table along with everything on the table. The mid-ground consist of Clara, her baby and Tink. The background consist of the wall behind them, a picture frame, and a plant.
Acting: The baby is crying so it seems as if he is upset, Clara has a smile on her face so it appears that she is happy and Tink look very frustrated because of her facial expression and her arms flailing around.
Setting: This scene shows that Codex has opened the door so someone came to the door and she had to open it to find Zaboo standing outside of her door. She also has flowers in her hand so she received flowers.
Lighting: In this scene it seems to have a lot of natural light, making the glare appear, and only a key light in this scene. With nothing but the key light there is a shadow against the door and her face looks a little washed out.
Costume: Codex is wearing a purple undershirt with a stripped green and grey tank top. She appears to be dressed as if she was doing something that required her to look nice.
Space:This scene has a deep space because it has foreground, mid-ground, and background. The fore-ground is Zaboo only. The mid-ground is Codes, the flowers in her hand, and the door and the background is the wall behind her, the picture frame, and the door.
Acting: Once again, we can’t see Zaboo’s face so we can’t say anything about his acting. However, Codex appears to be very confused. She is trying to play it off by smiling but her smile isn’t very convincing. She clearly looks very confused as to what is happening and why Zaboo is standing at her door and giving her flowers.
